Harvey By Mary Chase Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, this beloved classic is a treat for the whole family. Elwood P. Dowd insists on including his friend Harvey in all of his sister Veta’s social gatherings. The trouble is Harvey is an imaginary six-foot, three-and-one-half-inch tall rabbit. This funny, charming, touching play challenges us to embrace our imaginations and at all costs to resist being “perfectly normal human beings.” Post-Show Discussions: Connecting the community through artwork, stories, and conversation. Join us for discussions surrounding the themes of our plays and the impact of these stories on the community beyond our walls.
Saturday, November 21 Acting the Part The cast of Harvey will join us for a post-show discussion about igniting this delightfully charming and surreptitiously complex play for the Tysons area. The task of taking on well-known characters and creating a new journey out of an old story is unique. Hear from the extraordinarily talented cast of Harvey about their journey in bringing this play to life in a new way.
Sunday, November 29 Bright Lights and Silver Screens A discussion with Giovanna Chesler, Director and Associate Professor, Film and Video Studies at George Mason University and Director/Producer, G6 Pictures and Producer, Out in the Night. We'll discuss storytelling on stage and screen and the tactics for creating specific moments employed between the two mediums. Our case study will, of course, be the 1944 stage play Harvey by Mary Chase and the 1950 film adaptation starring Jimmy Stewart.
Saturday, December 5 The Spirit of the Play Join Folklorist Joy Fraser to discuss the title character, Harvey, and the Celtic lore of the mysterious pooka/puca figure. The legends of the pooka feature shapeshifting, benevolent creatures prone to mischief and magic. We'll discuss the significance of playwright Mary Chase selecting this mythical creature to tell this charming, classic tale.
Sunday, December 13 Rabbits, Pookas, and the Poetic Imagination: Seeing the world afresh Harvey is an imaginative rendering (a play) of the human capacity to see and engage in the world more richly and more compassionately when we are open to the work of the imagination. Join the Rev. Dr. Stephen Edmondson, a theologian and the rector of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church for a discussion of imagination and how it enriches our lives. |
